Program Description

Honor Flight recognizes American Veterans for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them to Washington, DC, to see their memorial at no cost.  Top priority is given to World War II and terminally ill Veterans from all wars.

Honor Flight was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and retired Air Force captain, as a tribute to the veterans to whom he provided care. In May 2005, Morse arranged for six small planes to transport 12 World War II veterans to Washington, DC, to see their memorial.

The World War II memorial pays homage to the 16 million Americans who served during the campaign. Through the Honor Flight Network (HFN), veterans are flown to see their monument on a “first-come, first-served basis.”

The Roughrider Honor Flight committee is currently the only active HFN hub serving North Dakota. The volunteer-lead organization transported almost 200 veterans from Bismarck, ND, to Washington, DC, in 2009. Roughrider Honor Flight expects to escort two more groups of veterans in 2010.

Of the 69,000 men and women from North Dakota who served during World War II, it is estimated that 7,000 to 10,000 are still living.

The Honor Flight Network is an national organization dedicated to the Veterans of WWII. The Roughrider Honor Flight is a proud member of this network.
